Bitpay and the Seminole County, Florida Tax Collector have come together to offer local residents the option to pay their taxes with Bitcoin or Bitcoin Cash.
Seminole County is the first county in US history to accept cryptocurrency for taxes, although other states and counties have proposed similar measures. Residents can now easily pay their taxes or renew a driver’s license using Bitcoin or Bitcoin cash. The May 14th, 2018 announcement was made by Joe Greenberg who serves as the Seminole County Tax Collector.
Greenberg praised the benefits of cryptocurrency and said this would make Seminole county the first in the country to accept payments for all tax services and payments. He said the county made the decision because for many years paying taxes by credit or debit card meant using a third-party processor with heavy fees.
“The blockchain allows the Seminole County Tax Collector to eliminate much of those heavy fees while improving payment accuracy, transparency, and efficiency which ultimately benefits Seminole County tax payers.” Greenberg said. He also expressed that by going this route it would, “bring government services from the 18th century into the 21st century and one way is the addition of cryptocurrency to our payment options.”
Jeremie Beaudry who serves as head of compliance at BitPay confirmed that the Seminole County Tax Collector’s Office is the first government agency to accept bitcoin and bitcoin cash for tax payments and services.
