There was purportedly a special SEC meeting said to be held on Monday May 7, 2018 to discuss the SEC status of Ethereum. The group was to discuss whether or not Ethereum was to be deemed a security. Turns out that the entire story was false.
One thing about the government we can count on is schedules and a simple check with the SEC shows there was no such meeting planned. Even still others made calls to the SEC just to see if Ethereum’s status was going to be discussed as a security. One such call (see below) was recorded and posted on Twitter to see and it was clear no such event took place.
While the meeting turned out to be nothing but a perpetuated Internet hoax, it still caused the value of Ethereum and other cryptocurrencies to drop.
For future reference, the SEC office’s schedule is public information and can be seen here.
So, I called the SEC & they said they have no clue what the fuck everyone is talking about w Ethereum. Call them for yourselves and confirm. They’re open until 5 PM EST GMT-4— YouHateMeiDontGAF (@CryptoMedicated) May 7, 2018
