Coinbase just announced their intent to support the Ethereum ERC20 technical standard for online exchange. They say it should be in place within the next few months.
While the company says it is open to future support for ERC20 assets, this does not mean they're announcing support for any specific assets or features at the moment. This announcement came after feedback from customers asking for more assets with the exchange site.
ERC20 is a technical standard used for smart contracts on the Ethereum blockchain. ERC stands for Ethereum Request for Comment.
Though many have been unhappy with its services of late, Coinbase, a San Francisco based company, is the most popular US cryptocurrency exchange site and is one of the highest profile names in the cryptocurrency world. Coinbase is particularly popular as a Bitcoin processor for many businesses including Overstock.com and Expedia. Currently Coinbase handles a select few of the top cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum and Litecoin.
