If you're familiar with the fictitious African nation of Wakanda you'll know it's the home to the Marvel comic superhero Black Panther, which was also made into the live action hit film by the same name. Now Grammy award winning artist Akon, who also appeared in the Marvel film, wants to start his own Wakanda and he wants to do it with his very own cryptocurrency, AKoin.
The Senegal-born philanthropist and Grammy award winning singer Akon says his new cryptocurrency he's calling AKoin should be available for sale to the public in about two weeks.
During a recent panel discussion at Cannes Lion 2018 Akon spoke some on the cryptocurrency and said he feels it could be the very thing the continent of Africa is needing. Currently many African national banks are in shambles with no real security whatsoever. Those issues coupled with outrageous inflation make a prospering economy next to impossible at times. Zimbabwe's 1 trillion dollar note once printed is a prime example of this.
“I think that blockchain and crypto could be the savior for Africa in many ways because it brings the power back to the people and brings the security back into the currency system," Akon said. "and [it] also allows the people to utilize it in ways where they can advance themselves and not allow government to do those things that are keeping them down."
Akon is well known for his philanthropy in Africa. So far the singer has helped power 18 countries on the continent using using solar energy through his Akon Lighting Africa project. The project has created jobs and installed ~200,000 household electric systems, 1,000 solar micro-generators and thousands of street lamps.
AKoin will be the power behind the Akoin Ecosystem, which will help with programs and opportunities for countless young entrepreneurs by removing the worry and expense of relying on a local or national banks.
According to the AKoin website the cryptocurrency will also be used to create a real-life Wakanda of Akon Crypto City.
The city is to be built on 2,000 acres of land that was given to him by the Senegalese President. The website says the city will be a “leading Smart City planning designs with a blank canvas for cryptonizing our daily human and business exchanges, with the goal of inventing a radical new way of existence.”
If you're curious if they'll have invisible flying craft, and any other of the cool stuff from the Black Panther film, Akon said, "I come with the concepts and let the geeks figure it out."
